Scope Note

In traditional Chinese architecture, refers to dramatic, curved tiles located at both ends of the roof main ridge. The term appears in official statutory documents regulating the types and grades of buildings that can use chiwei, thus it would have been a marker of high status. There are provisions for the sizes, practices, power limits, and regulations for the Chiwei used on buildings in the Yingzao Fashi (1103, 13.5a-b).
