Northern Song 960 - 1127
Originally built during the Shaosheng reign period of Song Zhezong (1094-1098). Four cast-iron statues are located in the four corners of the terrace, considered to be water-guarding spirits. They are nicknamed the 4 Iron Han, each are more than 5 feet tall. 2 were cast in the Shaosheng period, one in the Huizong’s Zhenghe period (1111-1118), and one in the Ming Hongzhi period (1488-1506). The original purpose of this terrace, as well as later repairs to the statues, is discussed more fully in Miller’s The Divine Nature of Power, Chapter 6.
