    Hanging inclined timber member supporting roof tiles. In Traditional Chinese Architecture rafters extend from purlin to purlin. Can also be used to as a unit of length, as in a "sichuanfu 四椽栿" (four-rafter cross beam), a cross beam extending the depth of four rafters.3
