Terms

  • 單栱造 (Traditional Chinese)
  • 单栱造 (Simplified Chinese)
  • dāngǒngzào (Pinyin)2
  • tan-kung-tsao (Wade-Giles)

Gloss

Literally "single bracket arm construction," in dangongzao (also dangong zao) single bracket arms parallel to the building plane are used to support beams, as do linggong 令栱, rather than adding another layer of, typically larger, bracket arms, such as mangong 慢栱 (Li 2009, 4.3a; 17.12a). In the Yingzao fashi 《營造法式》 (1103), this term could be used in contrast to "chonggong 重栱" or "chonggong zao 重栱造" where an upper layer of bracket arms was used (Li 2009, 11.3b). 3
