Note (brief)

Broadly speaking, a pillar is any vertical architectural element. As a part of traditional Chinese timber frame architecture, pillars may stand directly on the ground or be supported by other structural members within the roof frame. Pillars are named after their positions within the building. In the Song dynasty Yingzao Fashi (1103), pillar types that extend to the ground include leveling pillars (pingzhu), eaves pillars (yanzhu), and corner pillars (jiaozhu). In the Qing dynasty Gongbu Gongcheng Zuofa (1734), major pillar types include eaves pillars (yanzhu), interior pillars (neizhu), and gable pillars (shanzhu).
